Falcons top Spartans on senior night
Falcon wrestlers had a successful senior night with a 35-30 win over Southern Lehigh to wrap up their dual meet season. The meet had been postponed from earlier in the season because of harsh weather and was worth waiting for.
Southern Lehigh won by forfeit at 107 pounds and there was no match at both 114 and 133 pounds. The Spartans were unable to send out wrestlers at 121 and 127 pounds, giving wins to Jaxon McGuckin and Edwin Serrano Jr.
In the first true match of the night, John Samy won by technical fall over Scott Stevens in a 17-0 match for the 133-pound weight class. Southern Lehigh trailed 17-6 at the time but fired back with pins at 145 pounds and 152 pounds to take the lead at 18-17 before the momentum was back in favor of the Falcons when Nate Tone pinned Josh Sirard at the 3:59 mark to again put Salisbury ahead.
As if on cue, Southern Lehigh picked up another fall at 172 and were again up by a point at 24-23. The Spartans’ lead was again short thanks to Jakub Gloc pinning Angel Rodriguez in 1:24 at the 189-pound weight class. The teams again traded pins with Southern Lehigh taking the 215-pound match and Mitchell Miller pinning Ian Gill in the finale to give Salisbury the 35-30 win.
Salisbury finished the season 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial League, while the Spartans finish with a record of 8-12 overall and 2-3 in the Colonial.
Samy finished the year 24-5 and led the team in wins, while Miller went 23-4. Gloc also crossed the 20-win mark with a 22-6 record.
The team says goodbye to just four seniors. Shawn Donaldson (2-1), Toby Linn (13-10), Miller, and Samy all graduate.
The schedule features the Salisbury Duals this Saturday before districts begin on February 24.
