EHS girls upset PMW to reach EPC semifinal

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team had arguably its biggest win in several years and the top upset of the 2022-23 season as the seventh-seeded Green Hornets traveled to Pocono Summit and took down second-seeded Pocono Mountain West 59-54 in overtime last Friday night in the first round of the East Penn Conference playoffs.

Emmaus outscored the Panthers 11-6 in the overtime session to pull out the victory and avenge a three-point loss (41-38) to West back on January 6. The victory also stopped an 18-game win streak for the Panthers.

Emmaus led 14-12 after the first quarter and held a one-point advantage at halftime, 25-24. West outscored the Green Hornets 13-9 in the third quarter to take a 37-34 lead into the final frame, before Emmaus outscored the Panthers 14-11 to force overtime.

The Green Hornets had a balanced scoring attack, featuring three players score in double figures. Junior Mya Cooper led the team in scoring with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, while junior Taylor Griffith and senior Paige Inman finished with 13, with Inman having a 9-for-14 night from the free-throw line. Griffith had three 3-pointers. Sophomore Cassandra Doemling added eight points.

The run to an EPC championship ended in the semifinal round as the Green Hornets fell to Central Catholic 50-37 Monday night inside the PPL Center in downtown Allentown.

A slow start proved to be too much to overcome as the Vikettes outscored Emmaus 10-3 in the first quarter and went ahead 23-14 at halftime. The Green Hornets won the third quarter, going on a 12-8 run to pull to within five at 31-26 heading into the final frame. But Central outscored them 19-11 in the fourth to take the game.

Griffith and Olive Whitney finished with a team-high nine points. Cooper added seven points and Inman had six.

Emmaus will now await its opponent for the District 11 6A tournament. As the No. 4 ranked team in Class 6A, Emmaus will likely host Nazareth (ranked No. 5) in the first round of the district tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 24.
