I wanted to have some fun this week with my article, which is always food related, so I did an Internet search on the favorite foods selected for Pennsylvania.
“These 13 iconic foods in Pennsylvania will have your mouth watering” was posted in Pennsylvania Fun Facts Nov. 27, 2020, by Christi, according to onlyinyourstate.com/pennsylvania/pa-iconic-foods.
At the end, I give you a couple more websites that have different Pennsylvania favorite foods.
“Every region has [its] own classic foods, and Pennsylvania is no different. Although, arguably, ours are the best. Whether you’re a longtime resident or have moved away, these iconic foods in Pennsylvania will make you think fondly of our state. Here are some of the best,” the article states.
Pennsylvania has Polish roots, which endow us with such delicious foods as pierogi. This scrumptious filled dumpling is made with unleavened dough and often comes with a hearty dollop of sour cream. It doesn’t get much more delicious than this!
Dippie eggs are fried just right, which means not flipped, so you can dip your toast and enjoy the gooey yolk.
Another favorite of Polish descent, halushki is made with thick noodles or dumplings. With loads of garlic and tons of delicious pork, this is a scrumptious and inexpensive dinner.
Lebanon bologna is sweet, yet savory, and right from the heart of Pennsylvania! What’s not to love? In 1902, Harvey Seltzer, an ambitious butcher, mastered a unique blend of spices and 100% beef, along with a three-day natural hardwood smoking process that helped create the world of Lebanon bologna in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. The products are named Seltzers Smokehouse Meats.
Herr’s potato chips ranks high on the list. Did you know Pennsylvania is the snack food capital of the world? Herr’s is a family business for more than 70 years of making snacks that make people smile. Plan a fun and flavorful day with the family enjoying chips fresh from the factory at the Herr’s snack factory and visitors center in Nottingham.
Who could ever forget A-Treat? This beloved local favorite is headquartered in Allentown, and we just can’t get enough of it. Now it is A-Treat Bottling Company, owned by Jaindl, at 3150 Coffeetown Road, Orefield. You can purchase at this location per the website.
Shoo fly pie got its name because it’s so sweet that you have to shoo the flies away.
True Pennsylvanians know hoagies - not subs - reign supreme.
Red beet eggs are perhaps one of the oddest Pennsylvania classics.
Philadelphia is famous for its cheesesteaks.
Pretzels are a Pennsylvania classic, imported from Germany.
Where else but Pittsburgh would you find french fries on sandwiches? Primanti Bros. has been in business since 1933. The world sandwich headquarters is at 2100 Wharton St., suite 503, Pittsburgh.
Tastykakes are such a delicious part of growing up in Pennsylvania. The company behind Tastykake - Flowers Foods - has more than 100 years of baking experience. There is a warehouse at 4225 Fritch Drive, Bethlehem.
I have included two other fun sites that have some of the same but also different foods listed.
• tasteatlas.com/most-popular-dishes-in-pennsylvania: This list includes apple dumplings, roast pork sandwiches, funnel cake, ice cream floats, stromboli and banana splits.
• onlyinyourstate.com/pennsylvania/popular-pennsylvania-foods: This list includes scrapple, whoopie pies, chipped ham, birch beer, UTZ potato chips and PEEPS.
I am sure you also have your own favorites. These sites are interesting and show pictures of the food. Now I am hungry and am going to eat lunch.
Have a great week!
