A Coplay man died Feb. 10 in a shooting incident with Allentown police, according to Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin.
Xavier I. Arnold, 20, died at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township.
Allentown police said officers witnessed Arnold assaulting someone in the area of Eighth and Maple streets just after 8 p.m. in the city. As they chased him, Arnold reportedly fired a weapon at police, according to the report.
An officer returned fire, striking Arnold.
Martin said an officer, who was wearing a protective vest, was also struck. He was not injured, Martin reported.
“A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the decedent at the scene of the shooting, along with shell casings that appear to have been fired from that handgun,” Martin said.
Officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the full investigation, Martin said.
The investigation, ongoing as of press time, is being conducted by the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force with the assistance of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, Allentown Police Department and Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy performed Feb. 13 determined the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death is pending further investigation, according to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio.
