Following a narrow defeat on their home floor to begin the week last week against Central Catholic, the second straight loss to the Vikings in a span of the month, the Parkland High School boys basketball team was looking to finish off the week on the right foot, with just two more weeks of the regular season to play.
For the second time this season, the Trojans got the better of Allen, defeating the Canaries 69-46 last Friday night at Parkland in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference West Divisional matchup. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Trojans.
Parkland and Allen played a back-and-forth opening quarter with the Trojans outscoring the Canaries by three points to hold a 14-11 edge heading into the second. But that second quarter was a different story.
Parkland broke out in a big way thanks in large part to Nick Coval, who scored 15 of his game-high 32 points in that eight-minute span as the Trojans paced the Canaries to the tune of 25-9 to take a 39-20 lead at halftime. The rest of the way the teams just traded baskets until time ran out.
Zaire Smaltz finished with nine points. Matt Ray tallied seven points. Michael Toth recorded five points. Blake Bednar and Connor Johns both had four points. Gio Escalona and Robbie Ruisch each added three points and Joey Gerbasio rounded out the scoring for the Trojans with two points.
Parkland is 11-6 overall and 10-3 in the EPC, tied with the Vikings for second place behind Emmaus. The Trojans have clinched playoff berths in both the conference tournament and District 11 6A tournament. They played at Northampton this past Tuesday and host rival Emmaus on Thursday. They will finish the season with a nonconference game against Archbishop Wood on Sunday, followed by the regular season finale against Whitehall Monday, both are at home.
