PHS girls dominate EPC foes
The Parkland girls swimming team continues to show its mastery over Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foes as the regular season reaches its final meets.
However, the Trojans stumbled Jan. 21 in a rare loss to a fine Cumberland Valley team, 152-109. Even in defeat, coach Allison McPeek’s squad still provided some fine performances.
Freshman Milla Hahn won the 200-yard individual medley and finished second in the 100-yard fly, while Simone Lin won the 100-yard backstroke and earned second in the 200-yard freestyle. Another fine Parkland swimmer who is having a solid debut season is Kelsey McPeek, who won the 100-yard breaststroke and finished second in the 200-yard IM.
Earlier that week Parkland downed Nazareth 110-75. In this Jan. 17 meet the foursome of Madison Roseman, Lin, Hahn and McPeek won the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:54.59 time. Another relay team consisting of Sydney Platt, Hahn, McPeek and Roseman won a thriller in the 200-yard freestyle by half a second over a Blue Eagle squad. There was no drama in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Natasha Goldman, Ashley Settle, Platt and Lin won the race by nearly eight seconds over a second-place Nazareth foursome.
Lin has been a major part of Parkland’s success this season. In addition to her quality relay work, she’s performed well in her solo pursuits and the meet with Nazareth was no different. She won 200-yard freestyle by nearly six seconds over Nazareth’s Cameron Alvino and the 500-yard freestyle by an incredible 13 seconds over teammate Julianne Zaffiro.
Settle has been a good swimmer all season. The latest evidence could be found in the 200-yard IM race when she dominated the field in winning by more than seven seconds over teammate Taylor Coombe.
Hahn has also proven to be a serious weapon for the Trojan cause. Against the Blue Eagles she won the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly. Meanwhile, Parkland’s Johanna Cooke took first in the diving competition.
On Jan. 25 the girls squad defeated Freedom 142-40 for yet another EPC victory.
