It may not have been desperate times for Bethlehem Catholic after going through a mini two-game losing streak, but the Golden Hawks got back on track last week with a pair of victories to right the ship.
Becahi (15-6) knocked off Liberty and Dieruff last week to clinch a spot in this week’s East Penn Conference tournament.
Monday’s 47-45 victory over Nazareth gives the Hawks three straight wins to close out the regular season, as conference tournament action gets underway this Friday.
Head coach Scott McClary knew his team needed to pick themselves up after suffering two straight defeats late in the year, especially with one of them being a 39-37 upset defeat to a 2-16 Easton squad.
“Last week was huge for us,” McClary said. “We have handled adversity very well and it all began in practice. This group has been great in practice all season long. I am happy that they got rewarded and it carried over to our past three games. We are hopeful it will continue.”
While the recent losing streak was halted with last week’s results, McClary understands that it’s part of the process of a long season.
“We know the season will be filled with ups and downs, what we don’t know is how this particular team will handle it,” he said. “We are such an inexperienced team that we needed to go through these trials and learn how to stand back up, how to move forward, and how to be better for it. This is a very resilient bunch of young men.”
With such a young team, qualifying for the conference tournament is an added bonus for the group as they get ready for the District 11 tournament.
“We had to earn our way there in a very competitive league this year,” McClary said. “The experience that lies in front of us will be well worth the work these guys have put in.”
