CHS falls to Indians as Fehr reaches 100
Gavin Fehr realized what had happened, but he still wasn’t quite sure when he registered his 100th career victory as a Rough Rider.
A senior, Fehr pinned Lehighton’s Carter Hontz in 43 seconds during the quarterfinals of the District 11 Class 2A Team Duals recently at Freedom High School. Unfortunately, the Roughies dropped a 48-25 decision to the Indians.
“It was a very surreal feeling,” said Fehr, a 145-pounder who has a 28-4 record this season with 19 falls. “It didn’t fully hit me until the ref raised my hand, and my team started coming out onto the mat.
“It’s been something I’ve been hoping to accomplish since I was little, so it meant a lot to finally be able to do it.”
Head coach Joe Russo was happy with his team’s effort.
“We wrestled in the district duals for the fifth time in six years,” said Russo. “We didn’t have it the COVID year.
“We lost to Lehighton. We wrestled hard and hats off to Lehighton. They have a solid team.”
The Roughies have a home match against East Stroudsburg North Thursday and the following Wednesday against Pleasant Valley. They are currently 9-5 overall.
Juniors Chad Beller has a 29-5 with 17 falls mark at 215, and Mikhail Hartranft has 20-8 record with 10 pins at both 121 and 127 pounds.
Freshmen Evan Reed has a 20-10 record with 12 pins, and Gavin Hacker has a 12-8 record.
Russo knows it is time to shift gears.
“Our focus shifts to individual tournaments with the JV on the weekend of the 17th,” said Russo. “We have the district tournament the following weekend.
“We feel that we are in a very good position for the district tournament. Our guys have wrestled well and made progress. We believe we have a number of guys who can go deep into the postseason.”
