Brett goes 10-8 at Fairmont St.
Austin Brett recalled a particular match earlier this season, one that likely will always stay with him as he continues his career at Fairmont State.
Brett registered his team’s points in a recent 48-6 loss to West Virginia.
“It was at the coliseum there,” remembered Brett. “I went out and pinned the kid in 34 seconds. It was really cool because my parents were there to watch me.
“That was a match that I’ll always remember, and it really helped my season.”
The former Catasauqua product registered an overall 10-8 record this past year as a redshirt freshman, primarily at 133 pounds. Brett had an overall 63-29-1 record as a Rough Rider and placed among the top-four in his district weight class in each of his four years.
In many ways, this past season was a true learning experience.
“There was a lot to get acclimated to here,” said Brett. “It was getting used to everything. The expectations were high and the coaching was a little different. It was a matter of putting in a lot of time for the program.
“I was happy with my season, and I had some nice wins at the end of the season. Looking back, I think I could have picked up a few more wins.”
As a redshirt, Brett practiced with the team, but he couldn’t travel with them. He worked on his overall game, and also spent plenty of time in the weight room.
This season, Brett has adjusted to the extra minute of college wrestling, as the bouts last seven minutes.
“You have to stay on the pedal for seven minutes,” he stressed. “I know I have to be more active and move more on my feet.
“Being active for seven minutes is something that I am getting better at.”
Brett is pursuing a degree in criminal justice, and he hopes to join an agency such as the DEA or ATF. There is a police academy for seniors, and Brett is looking forward to it.
He plans to take a few weeks off and spend more time back in Catty. But Brett will get back to working out and weight training soon.
Fairmont State head coach Gennaro Bonaventura has appreciated Brett’s grit and determination.
“Austin has worked hard since the day he arrived on campus,” he said. “Even before that, I knew he was going to do well because of his work ethic. He redshirted and didn’t miss a workout.
“He has gotten a lot better on his feet, and obviously, the pin that was heard around West Virginia when he got the huge fall in the West Virginia dual for us. He always wrestles hard and has a lot of big moves in his arsenal. I’m excited to see how he does over the next three years.”
Chances are, the Fairmont State wrestling program will be pleased with Brett’s production.
