Coplay council discusses municipal pool repairs

At the Feb. 7 Coplay Borough Council meeting, Councilman Mark Molitoris, head of the park and recreation committee, noted a lottery calendar fundraiser is being planned to benefit the borough pool to help defray expenses. This fundraiser will be voted on by council at its next regular meeting.

Councilman Charles Sodl asked if council will set a dollar limit on the amount the borough will spend on pool repairs. After a council discussion - which included the possibility of obtaining grants to aid in pool repair, increasing the price of passes for the pool and cutting pool hours - it was decided to let the committee move forward with fundraising ideas.

At this time, there is no dollar limit set regarding how much the borough will spend on needed repairs. Having a voter referendum, as was discussed months earlier, is also an option being considered to get an understanding of how the borough taxpayers feel about the pool.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer, who also leads the Coplay Public Library committee, said the library board elected 2023 officers.

Eisenhauer will once again serve as president. Faye Schreiner is vice president. Melvin Procanyn is treasurer, and Katrina Klinger is secretary.

Eisenhauer said the library circulation continues to grow, with approximately 100-150 more people patronizing the library per month. The library will hold a book sale and bake sale in March and is planning to have the Vince’s Cheesesteak food truck in the pool parking lot May 9 as another fundraiser. Council will vote on approval of this event at the next meeting.

The borough intends to have a dedication of the tot lot since the new playground equipment was installed May 6, 2022. This event will be voted on for approval at the regular meeting.

Police Chief Ryan Emerich presented several officers with awards and acknowledgments at the start of the February workshop meeting. Mayor Steve Burker said they are fortunate and lucky to have these officers on the force.

Council President Lou Bodish expressed his gratitude by thanking the officers for “putting your life on the line” each day.

See next week’s edition for a story and photos on the officers’ recognition.

Borough council will hold its next regular meeting 7 p.m. Feb. 14.
