Council holds meeting without voting

Northampton County Council met Jan. 19 as normal; however, council was not allowed to vote on any resolutions or ordinances.

Council did not post the agenda at least 24 hours prior to its meeting as required by the Sunshine Act of 2021.

Votes for Jan. 19 agenda items will be held at council’s next meeting; those items include a lease and routine appointments and reappointments to various boards.

In other business, county council and Executive Lamont McClure received a certificate from AARP and the World Health Organization that recognizes the county as an age-friendly and livable community.

The Lehigh Valley was recently ranked as one of the best places to retire.

“Our median age is rising, and it’s very important that we be age friendly in Northampton County,” McClure said.

The county government runs senior centers and runs a home-heating program that helps seniors who are unable to afford fuel; further, the county has over 300 miles of accessible trails and waterways.

Council President Kerry Meyers thanked Carmen Bell and Becky Bradley, who presented the proclamation, on behalf of the seniors on council.
