Whitehall inducts 2023 HOF class

Whitehall High School inducted a team and an individual into its Athletic Hall of Fame last Friday night, Jan. 27.

The 1989 Whitehall softball team earned this honor by going undefeated and winning the East Penn Conference as well as the District XI Championship with an overall record of 23-2.

In addition to being outstanding on the field, the team won the Lehigh Valley Sportsmanship Award. The team was led by WHS Hall of Fame Coach Stan Luckenbill and WHS Hall of Famers Lorie Erie Schmalze and Meri Wall.

Other members of the team were: Lydia Barovero (Jr.), Nichole Bartos Eckrote (So.), Jen Billie (Sr.), Liz Billie (Mgr.), Sheila Clark Kocher (So.), Christi Cressman Krautzel (Sr.), Michell Cunningham Wagamann (Jr.), Michelle Dancheck Piatkiewicz (Jr.), Michele Fritz (Jr.), Tracy Gitski Perl (Sr.), Sheryl Gola Morales (Jr.), Rodd Luckenbill (Mgr.), Kim Marks Reichard (Jr.), Dani Martin Mitrakul (Sr.), Kirsi Norquist Turbedsky (Jr.), Val Poandl Bond (Jr.), Niki Reabold Schultz (So.), Jen Scholl Kovach (Jr.), Wanda Stengl Hohenshilt (Jr.), Sheila Yudt (Jr.), Sherry Yudt (Sr.). Assistant coaches were Don Stofflet and Dennis Yakubecek.

Will Peifley, Class of 1959, was a multisport athlete who excelled on the basketball court both as a player and a coach. As a student-athlete at Whitehall, Peifley was an all-conference center on the court as well as a member of the baseball and track and field teams. He had an outstanding basketball career at ESU. As the girls basketball coach at Catasauqua, he led two teams to Colonial League titles with the 1976-77 team going 22-0.
