LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Respectfully Yours: One person’s floor is another one’s ceiling

Dear Jacquelyn,

I recently moved into an apartment complex with about 30 units. I am noticing just how noisy my neighbors can be. The noises I’m learning to deal with have also made me hyper-conscious of the commotion I make. What are some polite ways apartment-dwellers can handle noise levels?

Dear Reader,

Apartment-building etiquette can be tricky to navigate.

Fortunately, common sense and social awareness can help you live in harmony with your neighbors.

The walls of many apartment buildings are incredibly thin. Sound travels through them much too easily. Laughing, watching movies, listening to music, or even having a loud argument can reach your neighbors, so be mindful of that.

Also, this advice becomes even more important for the late-night hours and in the early morning hours when everyone is settling into bed or might still be sleeping.

Some apartment communities post rules and guidelines for when it is acceptable to make noise, which may include playing music, practicing an instrument, or even hammering a nail into the wall. If rules are posted, follow those guidelines.

It also really helps to know the people who live near you. A smile and a wave can go a long way in forging good relationships. If you haven’t already, find an opportunity to chat with your neighbors. It will help to connect and get a better understanding of each other’s situations.

Being respectful and considerate of your neighbors is key in ensuring a peaceful apartment living space.

Respectfully Yours,

Jacquelyn
