The Northampton varsity swimming and diving team honored their senior swimmers and divers on Tuesday night during a home meet against Dieruff High School.

Northampton took wins over Dieruff with decisive scores of 125-49 and 148-21 respectively.

Freshman swimmer Sophia Pina joined seniors Andrea Davidson, Ava Gower and Hannah Krywonis to start the meet with a first place win in the 200 medley relay. Davidson would go on to claim first-place victories in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle events. Senior Ava Gower had her share of first place wins as she was first to the wall in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke events. Krywonis placed 2nd in the 50 freestyle sprint and 3rd in the 500 freestyle with season best times in both contests.

The men’s team also had a strong start with a Northampton win for the relay team of senior Bryce Torres and teammates Nicholas Isaac, Jacob Ladd and Ethan Brobst in the opening event for the men, the 200 medley relay. Torres would go on to post 2nd place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events. Torres achieved personal best times in both events.

In the 1-Meter women’s diving events, Isabella Kish claimed first place followed by Abigail Gutkowski in second. Kish also placed 4th in the recent EPC Diving Meet last weekend at Emmaus High School. For the boys, senior diver Boden Burkhart placed first, followed by Northampton’s Andrew Szeplaki and Alex Szeplaki in second and third respectively. Burkhart also contributed to a second place Northampton finish in the 200 freestyle relay event with teammates Micah Sommons, Jacob Ladd and Wilson Seglah.

Following the diving events, Northampton honored their senior swimmers and divers (Boden Burkhart, Andrea Davidson, Ava Gower, Hannah Krywonis, and Bryce Torres). Head Coach Cullen Mentzell spoke about the achievements and favorite memories of each athlete.

“This was a great group of seniors to coach over the past four years,” he said. “They will definitely be missed” Athletic Director Shawn Murray and Northampton Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik were also in attendance to honor the seniors.

While it was a great night for the Northampton senior swimmers and divers, there were also great contributions from the rest of the team. In other strong swims for the girls team Tuesday night, Pina placed first in the 100 backstroke event, Brenna Caley was first to the wall in the 100 freestyle, Ava Keenan grabbed a win in the 200 freestyle event and Gabriella Oswald claimed first place in the 50 freestyle event. For the boys, first year swimmer Aiden Kuntz smoked his previous personal best time in the 100 breaststroke to claim first place for Northampton. Ethan Brobst collected a pair of wins in both 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle events. Likewise, Northampton’s Ryan Franke touched first in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke events. Micah Sommons claimed first place in the 100 butterfly, beating his personal best by 2 seconds, and diver/swimmer Andrew Szeplaki grabbed a first-place win for Northampton in the 50 freestyle event.

Just past the halfway point in their 2022-2023 season, the Northampton K-Kids are enjoying a 5-1 record so far. Northampton will look to defend that record as they face Southern Lehigh in a nonconference meet at home on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. The K-Kids then travel to Nazareth for a 4 p.m. meet on Tuesday, January 24.
