Allentown resident and DeSales University theatre major Josephine M. LaTorres played the Mad Hatter and served as business manager for the university’s Act 3 children’s theatre production of “Alice in Wonderland” from March 17-April 12, 2022.

Act 3 was the capstone project of the senior theatre class at DeSales University, Center Valley, which took on the artistic and administrative roles of a professional theatre company.

In addition to performing in the show, the students also took on the various production responsibilities including company management, directing, box office, education and marketing, and designing and constructing the sets, props, and costumes for the play.

LaTorres’ also played Sister Berthe and a party dancer along with Carter Sachse of Orefield, who played a soldier, party guest, and was understudy Herr Zeller, Baron Elberfeld, and the priest in the university’s Act 1 production of “The Sound of Music.”

Act 1 is the highly acclaimed producing arm of the DeSales University Division of Performing Arts that encourages students to bring truth and beauty to the world through their art forms in plays, musicals, children’s theatre, dance concerts, and film festivals.

Inspired by Maria Augusta Trapp’s 1949 memoir of her family, “The Sound of Music” is the story of the Austrian von Trapp family and their governess Maria who comes to work with the children as she discerns whether to become a nun.

Eventually she falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Capt. von Trapp, who must decide to accept a commission in the German Navy at the start of World War II.
