For the Whitehall wrestling team, it will be all about staying on task. It is a long road toward March and the postseason.
“The team is wrestling well,” said head coach Tim Cunningham. “We are still in the early part of January, which gives us time to work on things in the room.
“Our team needs to improve on some things to win the close matches. The team is working extremely hard and their performance improves every time they compete.”
Through their first four matches, the Zephyrs went 3-1. They have defeated Pleasant Valley (59-6), Allen (63-12) and Dieruff (68-6), and they lost to Nazareth (49-17).
The Zephyrs finished 19th in the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic. In the Lehighton Indian Duals, they defeated Jim Thorpe (56-12), East Stroudsburg North (65-12), Lehighton (36-30), and Manheim Central (40-36), while they lost to Honesdale (37-30).
Senior Melquan Warren is the team’s returning state qualifier at 189, and he has continued to excel. Warren has a 12-2 record with nine falls. Warren finished fifth at the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic.
Cunningham has managed to blend experience with youth.
Fellow senior Hudson Saylor also is off to a good start at 152. Saylor has a 12-4 mark with five falls and also was fifth at the Bethlehem tournament.
Freshman Kai Wilmont is 13-3 with five falls at 107, and fellow freshman James Hopkins is 11-3 with seven falls at 215.
The Zephyrs were tested when they were scheduled to meet Bethlehem Catholic Wednesday.
Even though the Zephyrs are off to a good start, it will be a long process.
“We are installing the mentality of always competing to the best of their abilities,” said Cunningham. “We just have to keep working to score points and not worry about winning and losing.
“We have to perform better every time we compete.”
