Boys, girls fall to Moravian Academy
Catasauqua head boys basketball coach Eric Snyder was flabbergasted.
He watched Moravian Academy’s Tayden Miller and Chris Ray combine for nine three-pointers on 10 attempts in the opening half to help the Lions to a 68-54 victory Monday night.
The Rough Riders were coming off a 56-54 victory over Palisades a few days earlier in which John Pushkar hit the winning shot in the final seconds. Pushkar had 15 points, Bryann Rivera had 18, and Ian Juica had 16.
Against Moravian, the Roughies were up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, and trailed 39-22 at the half.
“We had a good first quarter,” said Snyder. But they lit it up. We told our players to be up in their faces. We talked about it, but we didn’t do it.
“It was unreal, They didn’t miss.”
Miller, who had seven threes, led Moravian with 28 points and Ray added 18. Rivera led Catty with 23 points and Hamaad Jenkins chipped in with nine. The defeat left the Roughies with an overall 2-10 record.
Snyder also stated shooting guard Frankie Pujols will be sidelined a few more weeks after an initial prognosis had him returning to the lineup in early January.
“We tried to cut into their lead, but we just couldn’t get close enough,” said Snyder. “Bryann Rivera played well. Hamaad Jenkins has been very aggressive and learning to play the point. He is working on his shooting.”
Catasauqua’s girls team dropped a 42-30 decision to Moravian Academy, and they fell to 5-7 overall. That game followed a win over Palisades, 38-22.
Hailey Jenkins led the way with 17 points. Delaney Troxell added 10 in that win.
Jenkins again led the way in the loss to Moravian scoring 15 points.
The boys will travel to Saucon Valley Thursday and will entertain Notre Dame Saturday afternoon, while the girls will host Saucon Valley Thursday and travel to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon.
