A year ago, the Bethlehem Housing Authority approved a grant aimed at helping cover some of the cost of the expansion of the Northeast Community Center’s pantry. Now opened, this newly renovated pantry, which cost $111,000, will be better equipped to help those in need. There is more space and a new entrance with ramp access. Director Paula Johnson came to thank board members at the Dec. 12 meeting.
This was the second major renovation for the NECC building in the last six years, Johnson told the board. Geared toward improving the building and making things more efficient, a third renovation is being planned.
Johnson asked the board to consider a grant request, this one focused on renovating the reception area of the NECC. “We are looking into having a more secure and appropriate reception area. Grants funds would also allow us to install a water fountain and a bottle filler, and touchless faucets in all of our restrooms,” she explained.
Safety and privacy for staff and visitors was also taken into account in the designs of this new entrance. Johnson hopes the functionality and aesthetics of the building will help re-energize the NECC’s place in the community.
Members gave no indication where they stand on the grant request or when they will vote on it.
The next monthly meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16. at 4 p.m.
