With eyes set on the impending holiday break and new year, the Saucon Valley School Board breezed through a few significant-but-uncontroversial pieces of business at its Dec. 20 meeting.
The board approved the varsity competitive cheerleading squad’s trip to Orlando, Fla. in February to compete at Nationals, the sport’s annual tournament that invites qualified teams from across the United States.
Head Coach Kristi Fedorowicz explained that this is the first year that Saucon Valley has fielded a team of the type, in addition to the more traditional cheer activities the squad participates in. “They have absolutely blown our minds” with their accomplishments as a nascent group, she said.
The excursion will be funded by money raised by the team, and a GoFundMe page with a goal of $10,000 had already raised about 10 percent of that total, Fedorowicz added. With sponsorships from local businesses earning approximately $2,000 more, “we’ve been very lucky… [and] we’re well on our way” to meeting that budgetary objective, she said.
The remainder of the sub-20-minute gathering largely featured routine personnel and budgetary matters, as well as the approval of the 2023 senior class trip to New York City at a cost to participants of $150 per person.
Additionally, Superintendent Jaime Vlasaty did not present a formal report, rather choosing to briefly acknowledge and thank the district’s custodial and maintenance staff for their labor on campus over the break.
