Boys fall to Central Catholic

The Parkland High School boys basketball team went into the holiday break riding a five-game win streak, its longest of the 2022-23 regular season so far.

The Trojans had nearly a week off between games following a victory over Pocono Mountain East on December 21. They opened up with their first game at the Reading Holiday Invitational at Reading Area High School with a defeat at the hands of Devon Prep on December 27.

The Trojans followed that up with a win over Central Dauphin the next night to finish 1-1 at Reading. Parkland then got back into Eastern Pennsylvania Conference competition this past Tuesday, falling to Central Catholic on the road for the first loss in conference on the year.

It was the second year in a row that the Tide have gotten the better of the Trojans in a holiday tournament, doing the same last year. Both games were by double digits as this season, Devon Prep won 66-54.

Parkland bounced back, however, less than 24 hours later. The Trojans defense held the Rams to just three points in the first quarter and outscored them 21-3 to take a commanding lead and never looked back in winning 63-43.

Nick Coval finished with a game-high 16 points, 10 of which came in that opening frame. Two others Parkland players finished in double figures in scoring, with Joey Gerbasio recording 11 points and Luke Spang adding 10. There were five others that got their name in the score column, including Gio Escalona with eight, Matt Ray with six, Zaire Smaltz and Robbie Ruisch with five and Owen Rodgers rounded it out with two points.

In Rockne Hall Tuesday, it was a low-scoring first quarter for both teams as the Vikings led 8-2 after one. The Trojans cut their deficit in half after two quarters, trailing 21-18. Central, then, jumped back on top more and took a nine-point advantage into the final quarter, where it was able to hold on. Coval had a game-high 24 points and Spang contributed nine.
