Historical society gratitude
Whitehall Historical Preservation Society held an invitation-only event of gratitude at the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, 501 Mickley Road, Dec. 14, 2022.
Invitees included the WHPS board of directors, members and others who assisted the society over the years. It was also an appreciation celebration of the recent renovation of the mill’s second floor.
Society President Stephanie Tashner thanked all who attended the private gathering for their ongoing support and the work they perform to enhance the grist mill, which holds a variety of historical memorabilia.
WHPS was awarded a grant from the Lehigh County Tourism CARES Act program. The funds were used for new signage and improved historical displays, designed to stimulate public interest in Whitehall Township’s rich history.
A virtual tour of the historic Helfrich Springs Grist Mill - built in 1807 by Peter Grim - and the Peter Grim Homestead, 506 Mickley Road, was created.
In-person tours of the grist mill are available by calling 610-776-7280. The mill’s first floor is available for small meetings or other gatherings. Call the number above for cost and additional information.
Whitehall Township Mayor Michael Harakal Jr. was thanked for his many years of support for the WHPS. Mick Dee, representing state Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-133rd, was also thanked for the legislative office’s assistance with the WHPS work.
Lehigh County government officials were thanked, along with Discover Lehigh Valley, for their assistance and commitment to Lehigh County’s history - and specifically the history of Whitehall Township.
Tashner noted WHPS is seeking volunteers, members and donors to advance the important work of preserving Whitehall’s history for current and future generations. The WHPS motto is “preserving our past for the future.”
