Zephyr boys start week at 6-2
Score well at a regular clip, and your team will win games.
It’s an old and obvious adage, but not one that always is easily adopted.
Ask the Whitehall boys’ basketball team.
Over the past few seasons, the Zephyrs have had trouble generating enough scoring outlets to produce enough wins to keep them in the East Penn Conference (EPC) and the district hunt.
This season, times are different around Mechanicsville Road.
Beginning this week, the Zephyrs had an overall 6-2 record and were definitely one of the surprising teams in the EPC.
For Whitehall, it has been about scoring. Through eight games, the Zephyrs have shot 56-percent from the field and 74-percent from the foul line. More importantly, they have registered more foul shot attempts (95) than their opponent (88).
Those numbers helped them to a recent 63-61 victory over Pocono Mountain West, two days after they suffered an upset 45-44 loss to Dieruff.
Against PM West, the Zephyrs made eight of nine foul shots in the fourth quarter and 15 of 19 for the game.
“It was a big win for us,” said Whitehall head coach Jeff Jones. “We played very well and shot very well.
“They had to foul us down the stretch, and we made our foul shots.”
Jones has been surprised in his own way about his club’s fast start. He noted the lack of varsity experience before the season.
“We only have four guys who wore a varsity uniform last year,” he said. “But these guys are used to winning. They have won at everything they have done, and we have a number of them who have played together for a while.
“They have a great chemistry among themselves. We may not have the best five guys on the floor, but we have five guys playing together. We all have embraced that role.”
Junior guard Luke Keppel is averaging 18 points per game and sophomore 6-7 center A.J. Hines has added 13 points. Junior Gavin Roberts is scoring eight points per game and fellow junior Ethan Ringenberger is scoring six per game.
“Luke and A.J. have been playing really, really well,” added Jones. “Gavin Roberts had 15 points against Pocono Mountain West, and Ethan Ringenberger had nine. There have been a lot of nights when we have had four guys in double figures. That’s pretty good, and we’ll take that every night.”
Whitehall hosted their own holiday tournament that began Wednesday. The Zephyrs meet Nazareth in the nightcap before Upper Darby and Conrad School of Sciences (Delaware).
Jones knows this own tournament will be a good test. He also likes the low profile his team has been able to maintain.
“If we win, we’ll get a good team,” he said. “Upper Darby is ranked among the best in the state and Conrad plays a very competitive schedule.
“We recently showed our guys a video about being an underdog. We’re happy flying under the radar. If we keep winning, teams will notice us more.”
