Liberty swimmers move to 3-0 on year

Liberty’s swimmers boosted their win-loss record to 3-0 with a boys 95-51 and a girls 97-50 victory over William Allen on Dec. 20 at Liberty.

The Hurricanes won all relay events: the 200 medley relay of Lilah McClarin, Natalie Brezinsky, Sophia O’Hara, and Morgan Muller (2:08.19) and the medley relay of Wade Wu, Malcolm Collins, David Gabrielle, and Danny Lehr (1:42.66); the 200 free relay of Angela Schray, Brezinsky, Katie Bruno, and Leah Onia (1:57.82) and the 200 relay of Corbin Eisenhardt, Gabrielle, Tim Wetmore, and Wu (1:36.60); and the 400 free relay of Chelsea Hearn, Audrey Bloss-Ferry, Keller Pooley, and Onia (4:20.57), and the 400 relay of Lehr, Eisenhardt, Wetmore, and Collins (3:25.69).

Schray, Brezinsky, Bruno, and Onia came from behind to win the 200 free relay by one second.

“I just went as fast as I could,” said Brezinsky who swam second. “I really wanted to catch the other girl, and it was the fastest I went in the relay this year.”

In girls individual events, first-place finishers for Liberty were Amelia Paxton in the 200 free (2:27.27), Brezinsky in the 200 IM (2:21.46) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.10), Hearn in the 50 free (26.82) and the 100 free (1:01.18), Bloss-Ferry in the 100 butterfly (1:07.37), and Onia in the 500 free (6:13.99) and the 100 breaststroke (1:18.23).

“It’s every event, and if you don’t sprint, you’re never gonna come back,” said Brezinsky of the 200 IM. “It’s very fun, switching it up all the time, and I like all the strokes. Someone in another lane could be faster in a certain stroke, so the competition is fun. All the coaches are very supportive, so it makes the training a lot easier.”

In boys individual events, first-place finishers for Liberty were Collins in the 200 free (1:51.23) and the 100 breast (58.63, pool record), Wu in the 200 IM (2:12.08) and the 100 back (59.77), Lehr in the 50 free (22.22) and the 100 fly (56.00), Eisenhardt in the 100 free (52.87), and Wetmore in the 500 free (4:59.41).

“This is my first time under 5:00,” said Wetmore of winning the 500 free, “and to do it not tapered and not suited, it felt good. I had under 5:00 in mind, but you don’t really know how you feel until you get in the water, so around the 200 mark, I knew I could do it. It’s a battle of your endurance, the last 300, to see what you can hold.

“I felt pretty bad earlier in the day. I mean, it’s our hardest part of training, Christmas training, but I was happy I got it done. You have to give full effort every day or you won’t get results. When you have morning (practices) at 5:30 a.m. and then afternoons, 4 to 6 p.m., it’s four hours of all you’ve got, so your body’s tired. You’ve got to eat right, you’ve got to sleep. You have to take care of yourself. That’s the hardest part, especially as a high schooler. It’s pretty grueling. Sunday’s the only off day.”

The Hurricanes celebrated their victories and Christmas with a party after the meet.

Liberty’s next competition is scheduled for Dec. 29 when they will take the trip to Pottsville to race the Tide.
