LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Holiday display

Are you a model train lover? Would you like to learn more about trains? This is a great time to attend the Model Railroad Explorer Post 101 annual holiday model railroad display. It runs 7-9 p.m. Dec. 29 and Jan. 5, 2023, and noon-4 p.m. Dec. 31 and Jan. 7 and 8, 2023, in room 201 at Coplay Borough Hall, 98 S. Fourth St.

Organizers Mike Busch and Robert Wagner said this special event is an invitation to attend the Explorer Post on a regular basis. The group meets 7-9 p.m. every Thursday at borough hall.

They are always looking for new members. The age to join is 14 years old, with exceptions made if interest is very high. Explorer members are aged 14-20. Those age 21 transition to an adult leader.

The Explorer Post was founded in 1976 by Dick Lobach and Jake Schock. Lobach is still involved in the program to this day.

This special holiday event has been a good method of drumming up interest. In 2021, 250 people came through the doors. They believe, despite the weather, they have exceeded this already in 2022.

Explorers is an offshoot of the Scouting program. It is geared toward skill building for future careers. Skills learned include carpentry, electrical, artistry and construction, so future opportunities and experience are inherent in this program. Other programs offered by the Explorers are in areas such as law enforcement and fire and rescue.

They take time to visit real railroads, too, such as the Reading Northern Railroad in Reading or the Steamtown Railroad in Scranton. Many friendships have been formed and future careers put in motion. For example, Busch and Wagner have been involved in trains since they were 12 or 13 years old. Busch lived near a railroad, which sparked his interest.

Busch said the Explorers are trying to raise more interest, as kids need positive experiences. Some kids are not sports-oriented and there is so much time that can be wasted with video games and kids playing on their phone. With the Explorers, there is much to learn, but the pressure is low. They encourage all Explorers to learn at their own pace. They recognize the individuality of each child.

For this display, each Explorer gets a module to create whatever the Explorer chooses or has interest in. All that is required is a willingness to take direction and learn.

Every year, Explorer Post 101 hosts the First Frost train show at Agricultural Hall in Allentown. The Post takes apart a caboose and sets it back up inside for this special event. This event features more than 600 tables of trains, collectibles, accessories and layouts.

Continue the holiday celebration by bringing the family to the Explorer Post 101 display. Come out to take a look at history and experience something unique.

Stop by and talk with the members. This may be a great opportunity to learn, make friends and prepare for your future.
