Community education classes to resume

The community education program will continue, starting with the spring session of the 2022-23 academic year in Northampton Area School District.
The NASD Board of Education voted unanimously 9-0 to approve the continuation, with Sandra Bischof as program coordinator at a stipend of $3,000 for the spring session.
The board’s vote at the Dec. 5 meeting included a list of anticipated community education classes and roster of instructors with stipends for the spring session.
According to the community education page on the NASD website, classes resume in February and March 2023. Classes are open to Northampton residents and nonresidents.
Classes offered are Zumba, yoga, water aerobics, lap swim and country line dancing.

In other business at the Dec. 5 meeting, the board voted 9-0 to approve Jason Williamson as NASD open records officer, effective Dec. 6; Courtney Muick, long-term substitute social studies teacher, Northampton Area High School, effective second semester of 2022-23 academic year, at $57,155, prorated; Katie Haklar, 12-month elementary head secretary, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Jan. 3, 2023, at $20.72 per hour, with benefits; Robert Sloss, Tuesday-Saturday custodian at Moore Elementary School, effective Dec. 20, at $21.90 per hour, with benefits; voluntary transfer for Jeremy Vernon, from Tuesday-Saturday maintenance employee to Monday-Friday maintenance employee, effective Dec. 6, with no change in base rate of pay; resignation of Curtis Fisher, NAHS custodian, for retirement, effective Feb. 3, 2023; Jessica Pretopapa and one NASD teacher to accompany approximately 30 National Honor Society students to New York City, April 19, 2023, at an approximate cost to the district of $220; and the NAHS 2023-24 academic year program of studies.
The board also approved the revised NASD health and safety plan required under American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.
Since the plan may be subject to revisions, whether immediately or from time to time as required by changing circumstances or federal or commonwealth orders and guidance, the superintendent of schools is authorized to adjust the plan based on the approved mitigation chart and input from state and local health care advisers as described in the plan. All plan changes will be placed on the district website and communicated to parents/guardians.
At the Nov. 14 meeting, the board voted 9-0 to approve resignations for Charles Hutterer, long-term substitute social studies teacher, effective Oct. 14; Denise Booth, long-term substitute school counselor, effective Oct. 13; Daniele Bowman, assistant to the athletic director, Oct. 3-Nov. 24; Dawn Croom, secretary, effective Nov. 11; Paul LeBlanc, maintenance employee, for retirement, effective Oct. 28; Thomas Hildebrand, NAHS custodian, for retirement, effective Jan. 31, 2023; Shea Killeen, custodian, effective Oct. 22; and Nuchanat Slanina, cafeteria monitor, effective Oct. 28.
Other approvals included revised and new policies for adoption: threat assessment, emergency preparedness and response and school security personnel; vendors for fuel oil for 2023-24 academic year as recommended by Northampton-Monroe-Pike County Joint Purchasing Board and as approved Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 board of directors at December meeting; to authorize the administration for one-year subscription with Clever Inc. for identity management subscription; substitute teacher service contract for instructors for homebound and instruction in the home services; partnership between Mid-Atlantic Rehabilitation Service and NASD for 2022-23 academic year for counseling, student support services and remedial programing for student assistance program at no cost to the district; memorandum of understanding for services between Valley Youth House and NASD for the 2022-23 academic year for additional counseling services at Northampton Area Middle School, Moore Elementary, George Wolf Elementary School and Northampton Borough Elementary Schools to not exceed $68,830 paid for by the American Rescue Plan grant and Title IV grant at no cost to the district; and clubs for the 2022-23 academic year: George Wolf Elementary’s Tinker Tank Steam Club, Moore Elementary’s Theater and Book clubs, NAMS’ Science Olympiad and NAHS’ Japanese Club.
The school district was closed Dec. 23 because of inclement weather. Winter break will continue through Jan. 2, 2023. Classes will resume Jan. 3, 2023.
