Gallery View: Snow Goose 30 years on Main Street
The Snow Goose Gallery celebrates 30 years in the same Main Street location with “What Goes Around: Part One,” featuring the landscape artwork of gallery owner Mary Serfass and the photographs of her son David Evan Serfass’ that influenced them.
The first of a two-part exhibition continues through Dec. 18.
“This piece is called ‘Blue’ because obviously it is,” quips Mary Serfass about “Blue” (2021; ink, colored pencil, acrylic, pastel, lapis and 24 carat gold, 6 in. x 6 in.). The deep blue of the sky is reflected in the deep water below, framed by golden fall foliage. It depicts a scene along the D&L Trail between Bethlehem and Easton.
“There is a certain comfort in working from my son’s photos, which are influenced by his observations of my work in all its evolutions during his lifetime,” says Serfass.
Serfass, born in New York City, has lived and worked in Bethlehem for 43 years. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from The Pennsylvania State University in 1978.
Serfass and her late husband Doug opened the Snow Goose Gallery in 1992. “I show my work all over the world,” she says. Serfass is known for her miniature paintings.
“I take pictures with my camera phone,” says David Serfass. “The photos I was taking were starting to look more and more like my mother’s work.” His late father advised them, “Why don’t you just do this together?”
“My photographs are inspired by my mother’s art, which in turn is inspired by my photographs,” David Serfass says.
The exhibition, “What Goes Around,” is the first part. “What Comes Around,” the second part, is to be held in November 2024.
David Serfass is a Freedom High School graduate, with a background in theater and the restaurant business, but helps out at the gallery, including curating this exhibit.
His 6.75 in. x 4.75 in. reference photograph displayed below the landscape by his mother is an example of their shared visions of the world. Each painting paired with a photo is sold as a set.
The Snow Goose Gallery exhibits works by artists from the Lehigh Valley and around the world. The gallery is home to a custom frame shop. Mary Serfass mats and frames her own work.
Lou Czechowski played the keyboard at the Nov. 13 opening reception.
The exhibit is dedicated to Mary Serfass’s late husband Doug Serfass, gallery co-owner, certified custom framer and musician who died in August 2022.
