Brandon Hall knows there will be plenty of growing pains for Liberty’s inexperienced wrestling roster this season, but the Hurricanes are having fun in the process and got encouraging results over the weekend at the Penn Manor Tournament.
Liberty finished fourth in the team standings and placed six wrestlers in the event, giving Hall a taste of what can become of his group through more reps and experience.
“It’s great seeing the guys grow and learning to trust the process,” said Hall. “We keep telling them to be patient and see where they are a month from now. We’re really young and a lot of these guys haven’t wrestled varsity before, so it takes time, but we learned a lot over the weekend.”
Liberty had two wrestlers in the finals with Kam Abboud (133) and Adriaan DeLeon (145) both dropping their championship matches to finish in second
Abboud lost to Robert Pavlek of the Hill School 4-3, while DeLeon dropped a 7-2 decision to Jared Fulton of Solanco.
Other wrestlers to place included Ryan Santiago (152, third), Jasiah Pagen (107, fourth), Seth Kolb (HWT, sixth) and Jack Evans (127, seventh).
“We had 12 wrestlers compete, so to place half of them was good,” said Hall. “The energy was great from the group and they wrestled well. They moved forward and looked to score and push the pace.”
Liberty (1-0) now moves to Wednesday’s bout with Bethlehem Catholic (1-0) next up on their schedule followed by Parkland next Wednesday to round out their schedule before hosting the Holiday Wrestling Classic on Dec. 28 and 29.
Freedom (5-1) has a similarly tough stretch before the holiday break, as they wrestle Nazareth on Wednesday and then take on Becahi next Wednesday.
