James Snyder Meminger
James Snyder Meminger, 93, most recently of Jensen Beach, Fla., died peacefully Nov. 22, 2022. He was the husband of the late Sara Louise Reddig Meminger for nearly 70 years, who died in February. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Cyrus Hollinger Meminger and Anna Margaret Snyder Meminger.
He attended J.P. McCasky High School, Mercersberg Academy, Elizabethtown College and obtained a master’s degree as the first trust banker from the Lehigh Valley to graduate from The Rutgers University Graduate School for Estates and Trusts. He served most of his career as a trust banker in Allentown, where he served as a senior vice president and senior trust officer. He was active in numerous banking trust committees in Pennsylvania and taught trust banking at Bucknell University before serving as school director. A longtime resident of Emmaus, he served as chair of the Emmaus Borough employee’s pension committee, president of Emmaus High School Booster Club and led the initial drive to build the Lehigh Valley Health Center which became Lehigh Valley Hospital.
He was instrumental in the establishment of a tennis program and courts at Brookside Country Club and served on the board of directors of the Regency Island Dunes, Florida, for many years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #43F & AM of Lancaster and achieved the rank of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason.
He served in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army.
He played any sport he had the opportunity to play and was still on the tennis court and was frustratingly (to his opponents) successful at 88 years old. As a high school student, he was ranked number 15 in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association. He was inducted into the Elizabethtown College Athletic Hall of Fame for lettering in basketball, tennis and soccer.
He was a devoted numismatist at a young age and had an extensive collection. He loved music and shared his love of music with family and friends.
A consummate gentleman, he comported himself with grace, good manners and kindness. He considered his greatest achievement and gift his family.
He is survived by daughters, Susan R., Ph.D. (John B. Frieling), Louise Reddig Meminger, Ann (T. Mitchell McCauley); grandchildren, Brooke E. Frieling, James B. Frieling (Elizabeth), James M. McCauley and Katelyn L. McCauley.
