James H. Hughes Sr.

James H. “Timbees” Hughes Sr., 84, of Macungie, died peacefully Dec. 1, 2022. He was the husband of the late Eileen (Smith) Hughes for 46 years at the time of her death in 2008. Born in Ashland, he was the son of the late Frederick and Dorothy (Walsh) Hughes.

He was a graduate of Ashland High School and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He retired in 1991 as a lieutenant after 28 years as a state trooper. He later worked for the Pennsylvania Federation for Fair Contracting for over five years.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and lifetime member of the Hogan’s Social Club, Allentown.

He was a current member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Emmaus and a previous member of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, Whitehall.

He enjoyed hunting, golfing and playing poker with friends. He loved being with family and watching his grandchildren participate in activities and sports. He and his wife followed their grandchildren sports careers to Boston, North Carolina and Tampa Bay. He always had time for a beer with a friend.

He is survived by a son, James Jr.; daughters, Colleen and her husband, Jeffrey Purvis, Sheri and her husband, Scott Horoshko; grandchildren, Ryan Purvis and his wife, Katie, Kyle Purvis and his wife, Angela, Tyler Purvis and his wife, Ashlyn, Bradley, Kailey and her husband, Eric Ritacco, Brendan, Evan Purvis, Jake Horoshko, Madison, Brian Horoshko and Riley Horoshko; great-grandchildren, Declan, Nolan, Henley, Keenan, Adelaide and Kellen; sister, Linda McCaffrey; brothers, Walter and his wife, Tina, Charles and his wife, Joy; sister-in-law, Kim. He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Schenk and brothers, Edward, Frederick and Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Dec. 15 at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 618 Fullerton Ave., Whitehall. His family will receive guests 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the church. The Gilbert Funeral Home of Whitehall is handling arrangements.
