James “Timbees” H. Hughes Sr., 84, of Macungie, died Dec. 1, 2022. He was the husband of the late Eileen (Smith) Hughes for 46 years.

Born in Ashland, he was a son of the late Frederick and Dorothy (Walsh) Hughes.

He was an Ashland High School and a Pennsylvania State Police Academy graduate.

He was in the U.S. Army.

He was a lieutenant for 28 years in the Pennsylvania State Police until he retired in 1991. He later worked for the Pennsylvania Federation for Fair Contracting for more than five years.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Emmaus, and was a former member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, Whitehall.

He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He was a lifetime member of the Hogan’s Social Club, Allentown.

He is survived by a son, James Jr.; two daughters, Colleen Purvis with husband Jeffrey and Sherri Horoshko with husband Scott; 11 grandchildren, Ryan Purvis with wife Katie, Kyle Purvis with wife Angela, Tyler Purvis with wife Ashlyn, Bradley Hughes, Kailey Ritacco with husband Eric, Brendan Hughes, Evan Purvis, Jake Horoshko, Madison Hughes, Brian Horoshko and Riley Horoshko; six grandchildren, Declan, Nolan, Henley, Keenan, Adelaide and Kellen; a sister, Linda McCaffrey; two brothers, Walter Hughes with wife Tina and Charles Hughes with wife Joy; and a sister-in-law, Kim Hughes.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Schenk; and three brothers, Edward, Frederick and Donald Hughes.

There will be a calling time 9:30-10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m., Dec. 15 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, 618 Fullerton Ave., Whitehall, 18052.
