Allen Township Fire Company is reminding residents of some practices to ensure a safe holiday season.
Purchase extra batteries to avoid taking them from smoke detectors to power toys or other gifts. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms should be tested monthly.
Christmas trees should be watered daily to avoid drying out. A dry tree is a fire hazard. Additionally, residents should make sure to turn off tree lights while they are sleeping or away.
Make sure you keep an eye on lighted candles. The majority of home decoration fires are started by candles.
While decorating your home, be aware of safe extension cord practices. Do not plug extension cords into one another, make sure they are properly rated for their intended use and meet the power needs of the device being used, keep outdoor cords clear of snow or standing water, do not overload extension cords, inspect cords for damage, do not staple or nail cords, do not run cords through areas, such as walls and ceilings where heat cannot escape, never use a three-prong plug in a two-slot outlet, and do not use extension cords or power strips with heaters or fans.
Residents are reminded to keep fire hydrants clear from snow to allow the department easy access in case of emergency.
