Township commissioners look ahead to 2023

At the Dec. 5 monthly workshop meeting, Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners discussed various motions relating to the new year.

The proposed 2023 budget estimates nearly $2.5 million in revenue and more than $2.9 million in expenditures for a difference of $4,465,295. The budget also includes funds for an additional police officer, another fire inspector and a full-time recreation chief.

Commissioner Jeff Warren confirmed, though, if approved next week, the township’s real estate tax rate would remain at 3.8 mills.

The board also discussed a motion that would approve a proposal to replace the filtration system at Hokendauqua’s Parkview Pool.

Repairs for the Cementon Pool are not included in the budget as they are expected to be in excess of $750,000. Further, the board is waiting for an update on the recreation and open space plan, which will provide further direction.

The purchase of new police, fire and public works vehicles were also considered.

One ordinance proposed the purchase of two 2023 Dodge Chargers and one 2023 Dodge Durango for the police department. Another recommended the purchase of a 2023 Ford F350 4x4 and one Ford F600 4x4 truck for the fire department, with another 2023 Ford F350 4x4 for the public works department.

Commissioners also discussed accepting a $140,000 grant for roofing repairs on both buildings at the Mickley Prydun Farm property. This grant, according to Warren, could complete the repairs on the property.

Commissioner Phil Ginder suggested paving a parking lot for access by emergency services and safety in wintry conditions. He felt the township should look for a grant and finish the project before it doesn’t get done.

Ginder also commented on the number of potential parking spaces.

The board of commissioners next meets 7 p.m. Dec. 12 in the township municipal building, 3219 MacArthur Road.
