Donation to Emmaus Public Library debated

During the Nov. 21 Macungie Borough Council meeting, there was discussion during the budget workshop portion about the annual funds to be sent to the Emmaus Public Library. The 2022 amount budgeted from Macungie is $20,416, according to library reports.

According to the report submitted by the library, there are 1,343 Macungie Borough residents who have library cards. Some council members said the library is a necessity not just for books but computer usage and other services. Council member Carl Sell suggested Macungie withdraw from the library program and have residents pay a yearly membership fee. With today’s technology, it was said a computer can supply the needs. Other members suggested library services are valuable to the community and residents. Four council members approved maintaining the contract with the library.

The Macungie Ambulance Corps provided a report for the borough stating they responded to 444 calls for service in October; 30 of those were in Macungie.

The Macungie Ambulance Corps recently mailed annual subscription requests to community members. Last year, they mailed out 17,137 subscription requests and received 4,268 in return or 24.9%. They thanked those willing to donate saying, “Without these gracious donors, we would not be able to serve the community.”

The sidewalk issue with Stone Hill Meadows continues to be a controversial subject. There was discussion to remove the existing sidewalks and replace them with the proper size. After further discussion, it was decided to allow the sidewalks to remain at 4 feet. There is a $13,910 credit to be added to the sidewalk fund in Macungie due to the agreed upon waiver.

The payroll processing process was discussed and ADP was approved by council to reduce borough personnel’s workload as well as offer some newer technology.

Kevin Weider was reappointed to the vacancy board with the term ending Dec. 31, 2023. Jeff Stauffer was reappointed to the Borough Water Authority with the term to expire Dec. 31, 2027.
