Comcast looks to expand into Emmaus
Emmaus Borough Council met Nov. 21 and began without personal appeals and moved to the community minute.
There was discussion on Small Business Saturday planned for Nov. 26.
Emmaus’ Old-Fashioned Christmas will be held Dec. 3. The tree lighting will take place 6 p.m. The event is at the Emmaus Triangle.
In communications, there was a discussion on a Comcast network expansion. Comcast expressed its interest in expanding a hybrid fiber coax network to borough residents and businesses. This will bring the Xfinity and Comcast business brands, products and services to the borough.
A letter of resignation was received from the Emmaus codes official. That position will most likely need to be filled soon.
There was no unfinished or new business to discuss.
The meeting then moved to the committee reports.
In public works, a new compost site policy was approved. There will be a flat fee of $50 per load brought in by commercial users. Contractors must set up an account and will be billed on the first of each month. The facility is open 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, 7:30 a.m. to dusk or 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The facility is open seasonally.
In health, sanitation and codes, there were requests to release funds to three separate construction projects. First was for the Emmaus Commerce Center, the second was for the new local Wawa, third was for The Towns at South Mountain.
Resolution 2022-46 was also passed during this report. This was a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Traffic Signal Maintenance Agreement.
Councilman Chad Balliet closed by requesting resumes for the codes official position, as well as volunteers for the zoning hearing board.
In public works, new software was approved to be purchased for the EMS department called First Due Software. The second item was the approval of the 2023 Lehigh County Humane Society contract for animal control services.
The 2021 audit review was discussed during the budget and finance report. The committee was generally satisfied with the audit of borough expenses and the review was approved.
The bill list was quickly approved. The top items were health insurance, sewer charges and refuse and e-waste services.
Borough Manager Shane Pepe closed the meeting by mentioning a temporary website is being prepared and will be going live soon.
The meeting was then adjourned.
The next Emmaus Borough Council meeting will be held 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at 420 S. 10th St.
