Lexie Warsing and Leah Zolotareva earned a third-place finish in the PIAA 3A girls doubles tennis championship last Saturday afternoon at Hershey Racquet Club.
The Parkland duo defeated Conestoga’s Kate Emmanuel and Isabel Emmanuel 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 to earn the bronze. The state tournament was won by Methacton’s Hana Noualme and Alice Liang.
The Trojans received fine play from freshman Warsing and senior Zolotareva all season and this tournament proved no different. In the first round last Friday, Warsing and Zolotareva dismissed Conestoga’s Jennifer He and Bella Chen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Later that evening the Parkland duo were more impressive in a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal win over North Allegheny’s Emily Wincko and Abbey Swirsding.
Both victories displayed the wealth of Warsing’s complete tennis game and Zolotareva’s grit and determination. Together the pair provided opponents many problems.
The next morning in the semifinals Warsing and Zolotareva played good tennis that was not quite good enough to get by the eventual tournament champions. After losing the first set to Noualme and Liang, the Trojans battled back to take the second set, 6-3. But the third set was the end of the line as Warsing and Zolotareva lost, 3-6.
