PHS knocks out Nazareth
It was a similar offensive game plan to what they have been utilizing all season long. But this time, it was nearly flawless and led to a big night in a big game.
The sixth-seeded Parkland High School football team rushed for a season-high 301 yards on the ground, including 216 from junior running back Trey Tremba, as they pounded third-seeded Nazareth 42-14 in a District 11 6A quarterfinal round game last Friday night at Andrew Leh Stadium.
It was a bit of a revenge game for Parkland (7-4 overall) as it fell to the Blue Eagles (9-2) in week two, and the Trojans played a full game according to their coaching staff and its players.
“Friday night was perhaps the first time we saw a great week of practice translate into a full 48 minutes from offense/defense/special teams,” said assistant coach Mike Facchiano. “That was the challenge [head] coach Moncman had for the team following Week 10, and they achieved that goal.”
“We played a great second half against Emmaus,” Tremba said. “We knew if we just played a full 48 minutes like that, we could get the win. That’s what we did today. We played our hearts out. I think we did an amazing job.”
Along with his workmanlike rushing effort, Tremba also scored three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Luke Spang finished with 165 yards passing and had a touchdown passing and one running. Jack Harrison had six catches for 133 yards. The offense had 466 yards total.
“The offensive line just did an amazing job for me, so we weren’t going to stop doing what was working,” Tremba said. “We could have passed, but why would we? The run was working.”
Facchiano also was impressed with how the line in front of the running backs and Spang played. The line includes Nate Kemmerer, Russell Clark, Kale Kumernitsky, Owen Broadhead and Ali Wezza.
“Having the offensive line lead the way for the rushing attack of Tremba and Wimberly, which set up the passing game,” Facchiano said. “That type of execution allows us to be balanced on run/pass which is our goal every week. Defensively, the defensive line got consistent push throughout the game allowing our linebackers to get to their run fits.”
The Parkland offense found the end zone on its first two possessions on two Tremba runs and they went into the locker room at halftime leading by that 14-0 score. Harrison caught a 12-yard pass from Spang to extend the advantage to 21-0 early in the third quarter. The Blue Eagles got on the scoreboard on their offensive possession via a 74-yard pass, but Tremba and Spang finished off the quarter with a rushing touchdown each to put the game out of reach going into the final quarter.
“The confidence is high,” Tremba said. “We’ve got Northampton, an undefeated team. We know they’re going to be a hard team, too. We’re going to have to play a full 48 minutes.”
Parkland and the second seed Northampton will meet in the semifinals on Thursday night at Northampton High School. Weather pushed the game up from Friday.
