Freedom HS News – Out with pumpkin,in with turkey By Jonathon Chiu
It’s November and while the weather may become colder, it has not stopped students at Freedom from giving their all. With the second marking period in its second week, students have had time to adjust to their new classes and meet new people, teachers and students alike.
Ally week - a national effort in schools K-12 in supporting the LGBTQ community - commenced Oct. 17. The following week, Spirit Week began Oct. 24 and ended Oct. 28, with themes ranging from “Pajamas,” “Anything but a Backpack,” “Adam Sandler” and more. A hallway decorating contest weeks in the making also took place, with the freshman class winning with their hallway theme of “Avengers assemble.”
A pep rally to celebrate the Freedom-Liberty game took place Oct. 28, with students from freshmen to seniors participating in activities such as a stretcher race, obstacle course and tug of war. Students who won a raffle before the pep rally also got the chance to participate in pieing selected teachers.
The football team has been on a roll as they achieve victory after victory. On Oct. 24, the team won 24-13 against Bethlehem Catholic and smashed the Liberty Hurricanes in a 38-7 victory Oct. 29 to claim the George Resetco trophy and end the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) South Division.
This winning streak continued well into November. On Nov. 4, the team scored 38-0 against Hazleton. The team also narrowly won a 28-27 victory against the Emmaus Hornets Nov. 10.
The Freedom Patriot Band also played in tandem with the Liberty Grenadier Band during the halftime show of the Freedom-Liberty game, playing hits from the Beatles such as “Hey Jude” and “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
The Gender and Sexuality Alliance held its solidarity week starting Oct. 31 with the coffee shop handing out rainbow stickers with any drink order and students being able to sign a solidarity pledge at tables outside the cafeteria.
On Nov. 3, FHS held an induction ceremony to welcome the newest members of its National Honor Society chapter and celebrate their achievements. Bethlehem Mayor William Reynolds attended the ceremony as a keynote speaker.
Laurie Sage, Dr. Carla Krieger, and the officers of Freedom’s NHS chapter also gave speeches before calling up the inductees to sign their names into the NHS’s book of inductees and recite the oath of the National Honor Society to officially become members. A reception was also held following the ceremony where refreshments were served.
The softball team held a Bake & Bracelet sale from Nov. 7 to 11. Freedom was closed Nov. 8, Election Day.
