PHS falls to Emmaus in semifinals
By now, the Parkland and Emmaus High School field hockey teams know each other well. The two teams met in the regular season finale on October 11 and then again in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinals eight days later.
For the third time in a span of three weeks, the Trojans took the field against the Green Hornets, this time in the District 11 3A semifinals last Tuesday night at Whitehall High School.
But just like in the other two games, top seed Emmaus got the better of the fourth seed Parkland, winning the district semifinal round game 8-0 to advance to the district final and are looking for their 34th consecutive championship.
The Trojans were in it for the entire first half and actually had the Green Hornets flustered at halftime. Emmaus held a 2-0 late at the intermission, but looked off their game thanks to Parkland. But then they got it rolling right out of the gate in the third quarter, scoring four goals in the first seven minutes to take control of the game and win their 66th in a row.
For Emmaus, Melea Weber led the way offensively with three goals. Rachel Herbine and Abby Burnett each had two and Autum Kernechel rounded out the scoring. Parkland goalie, Hope Paternik, had a busy night. She finished with 25 saves inside the cage.
Parkland and head coach Julie Sikorsky will graduate six seniors, including Ava Bornstein, Courtney Gibbons, Lily Kyvelos, Paterick, Reese Shaffer and Lainie Walker. They helped the program reach the conference and district tournaments in multiple years during the career, including an EPC and district final.
The Green Hornets advance to the district final to take on second seed Easton on Thursday, back at Whitehall.
