The Parkland girls tennis team’s perfect season ended abruptly with a first-round loss in the PIAA 3A girls tennis championship last Tuesday afternoon.
The Trojans were defeated 3-2 by Spring-Ford at Northwood Racquet Club in Easton.
Freshman phenom Lexie Warsing won her No. 1 match thanks to a Mia Matriccino forfeit. But things went downhill mostly from there as No. 2 Leah Zolotareva lost a tight first set to Evelyn Mejia 6-4 and then lost the second set and match, 6-2. Then Spring-Ford went ahead in the No. 3 battle when Caitlyn Krause beat Parkland’s Gigi Leonzi 6-2, 6-2.
All season long the Trojans’ Anshika Gupta and Sophia Petrocelli have been superb for coach Michael Hingston. But on this day they didn’t have it and lost to Spring-Ford’s Chloe Moore and Alexis Luo, 6-1, 6-0.
The afternoon’s only on-court Parkland victory came from Sophie Elijovich and Aarohl Vaze. The talented sophomores played solid tennis and utilized good teamwork in beating Katie Tiffan and Ayushi Jain, 6-3, 6-2.
While Parkland girls tennis is finished for 2022, Warsing and Zolotareva will play in the first round of the PIAA 3A girls doubles tennis championship. They’re scheduled to battle Conestoga’s Jennifer He and Bella Chen at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
