Emmaus girls win gold

The Emmaus girls cross country team earned more hardware last Tuesday when the Hornets won their fourth consecutive District 11 3A championship at DeSales University.

Emmaus placed four girls in the top 11 places at districts in amassing 34 points, ahead of second-place Southern Lehigh with 63.

“Its amazing,” said Hornet senior Hailey Reinhard, who took second place overall in the girls race at 19:17. “I love this group of girls and I’m so excited to go with them to states.”

Reinhard, who won the EPC title a week earlier at DeSales, has finished in the top 10 at districts all four years of her high school career. She was top five the past three seasons, including an individual district title in 2021. This year she finished just behind Parkland’s Lana Hurwitz, who took first place in 19:09.

“I didn’t know what to expect with the rain and the course and everything,” Reinhard said regarding last Wednesday’s cold and rainy conditions. “I was just going to go out hard like I did last week (at leagues) and see how things turned out. It was muddy in the back and I did slip a little bit but I just tried to go home as hard as I could.”

Emmaus freshman Madelyn McCartney, who clocked 10 seconds behind Reinhard, took third place at districts. The next Hornet runner was sophomore Addison Johnson, who finished eighth in 20:24. She was followed by sophomore Payton Campbell in the 11th position at 20:44 and senior Nicole Nosal (21:04) capped the Emmaus scoring with a 16th-place finish. Junior Addison Shank (27th) and sophomore Isabella Scarlata (28) were also part of this year’s district team.

After going undefeated in the regular season and capturing league and district titles, the Hornets head to the state meet this weekend with one of their strongest teams in the past several seasons.

“Hailey is team-focused and has thrived on having Mady McCartney, Payton Campbell and her other teammates beside her along the way,” Emmaus head coach Kami Reinhard said. “She has set the bar high for her team, and has helped them get to that same level and that’s what makes a champion. You aren’t great at anything, until you help someone else become great.”

The PIAA cross country championship is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Hershey.
