EHS blanks PV in playoffs

The Emmaus High School girls soccer team was excited to get back out on the field and erase the memory of their last game, a 1-0 overtime defeat to Parkland in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Mission accomplished as the Green Hornets took care of business and defeated Pleasant Valley 3-0 last Wednesday evening in the District 11 4A quarterfinal round at Emmaus High School.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of games for us, but a win is a win,” said Hornet head coach Sarah Oswald. “I thought that we could’ve done some things a little bit better, but at the end of the day we won and are advancing on. Our goals are still in sight.”

Kam McWhinney and Ananya Roy found the back of the net for Emmaus, which improved to 17-4-1 overall. The Green Hornets were helped out by the Bears (9-9-1), who inadvertently knocked in the third goal off the foot of one of their defenders to push the Emmaus’ advantage to 3-0.

McWhinney’s goal came in the first half with 18:02 left until halftime. The game’s opening goal in the 27th minute came after an initial shot was saved by Mya Manigo, but McWhinney was in the right place at the right time to collect the rebound and follow it up with a shot into goal.

The rest of the half played evenly and into the first 10 minutes of the second half until Roy found the back of the net in the 51st minute to double the Green Hornets’ lead. An own goal then with 14:20 to play was the nail in the coffin for the Bears.

“Kam and Ananya both came up big for us with their goals,” Oswald said. “We needed both of them today and they came through for us.”

Emmaus finished with 10 shots compared to two from Pleasant Valley. They also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Ashley Stine did not need to make a lot of saves while earning the shutout victory. Emmaus will now take on the second seed, Easton in the semifinals on Tuesday.
