Batten earns trip to state championships

Salisbury freshman Emily Batten is headed to Hershey.

The fleet-footed Falcon runner took seventh place at last week’s District 11 Class A cross country championships to earn a trip to this weekend’s PIAA Championships at the Parkview Course at Hersheypark.

Batten ran the race in 21:40. The top 10 finishers who are not part of state-qualifying teams advance to states. Batten was the third runner across the finish line who wasn’t part of either of the top two teams, which both go to states as a team.

Moravian Academy freshman Virginia Kraus won the event in 18:51, which was 49 seconds faster than Olivia Schweitzer (20:40) of Notre Dame (Green Pond) in second place. Notre Dame placed four runners in the top five to secure this year’s team title, while Mahanoy Area finished second as a team.

In the boys district championship race, Salisbury Conor McGinty led his team with a 22nd-place finish in 19:46. He was followed by teammates Cameron Kubinsky (40th, 21:27), Charlie Morton (43rd, 21:42) Gregory Tenzer (45th, 21:48), Stuart Carl (47th, 22:57), Joshua Orach (65th, 23:35) and Joseph Tiao (72nd, 24:06).

Salisbury’s top five runners compiled a team score of 182, which was good enough for sixth place out of 13 Class A teams at the meet.

Palisades’ Thomas Smigo won the boys race in 17:07, while Minersville’s Keegan Dub was second in 17:52 to lead the Battlin’ Miners to this year’s Class A team title. Tri-Valley took second place as a team.

In Class 3A, Parkland nearly pulled of a sweep. The Trojans’ Paul Abeln won the boys individual title to lead the Trojans to a team title. Parkland’s Lana Hurwitz won the girls race, edging defending district champ Hailey Reinhard of Emmaus. But Reinhard and the Hornets took the girls team title four the fourth straight season.

In Class 2A, Palmerton surprised the Northwestern boys by taking the team title despite Northwestern’s Matt Santana winning the individual title. Northwestern’s girls team won the Class 2A team trophy while Wilson’s Avery Errico took the individual title.
