Parkland School Board President David Hein commented on the school board committee process at the Oct. 18 meeting.
He spoke in response to remarks made by Buildings and Grounds Committee Chairperson Patrick Foose who alleged at the Sept. 29 meeting that he had difficulty obtaining information regarding the proposed LED swim scoreboard.
Foose claimed the procedure of supplying background material regarding costs and options on the scoreboard was “not open and transparent” and asserted he had trouble finding out what he wanted to know.
The swim scoreboard had been discussed at the Sept. 12 Personnel and Finance Committee and the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Committee but not Buildings and Grounds.
Each committee meets the Monday in the week before the regular Tuesday board meeting to allow members time to review what was discussed.
Many topics from the committees are placed on the agenda for a vote at the next board meeting.
Hein addressed the issue.
“Not every item is at every committee meeting. Every board member has access to every item. Board members should go to the committee head for information,” Hein said.
Hein added he has worked for transparency his nine years on the board and tries to keep things nonpolitical.
In a different matter, board Vice President Carol Facchiano reported the Parkland Education Foundation raised $38,000 during a recent golf tournament.
She said 105 golfers participated in the event at Brookside Country Club.
Facchiano said the people at Brookside were “great hosts” who provided a congenial atmosphere for the successful event.
