Becker just taking things in stride

By now, Catasauqua’s Sophia Becker is used to action.

This season, Becker recorded 377 saves as the Rough Riders’ field hockey goalie. In three seasons, she has 686 saves. Through it all, Becker finished with an 81-percent save percentage this season and had one assist.

Since her freshman year, Becker has been in the nets, and it has proved to be a rewarding experience.

“I had been wanting to try it,” said Becker about her experience as a goalie. “Ever since I did, I have been falling in love with it ever since. The only thing I miss is the chance to take the ball and score a goal.”

With the program struggling the past three years – 4-14 this season and five wins in the past three years – Becker has tried to keep everything in perspective.

“We’re trying to get it together,” she said. “We worked on playing better defense, but we still had problems scoring. We all keep working, though, and we won’t give up.

“I know I will face a lot of shots, and I work to do my best to save as many shots as I can.”

Becker has adjusted through the physical and psychological blows of the situation.

“I definitely have gotten used to it, and that’s the reality of it,” she said. “I lean on my teammates for support. It can be pretty trying physically, but I have made the changes I need. I was getting injured.

“When I would face so many shots, I would think it was all my fault. It began to wear on me. It took a while, but I realized I was doing what I could.

“It also can get frustrating. There are some games where the other goalie didn’t get a shot on her or just a few. But I just kept calm and stayed focused.”

Head coach Emily Marley has appreciated all of her efforts.

“Sophia has been our starting goalie since her freshman year, and she has made a huge impact on the field,” said Marley. “This season, she was named one of our captains and was a true leader all season.

“She is a fantastic athlete who is never content with her performance.”

Becker will now turn her attention to basketball.

“I am excited for it,” she stated. “I played during the summer, and we have a good group of girls back.

“I tend to think of myself as a physical player, taking some of that from field hockey.”

She also is the starting catcher on the softball team, and has formed a formidable tandem with fellow junior and pitcher Delaney Troxell. She has made her presence felt.

“Being a catcher, I see myself as a leader on the team,” she said. “I take pride in what I do out there, and we have a good group of girls.”

For Becker, it is just a matter of staying focused. She has credited her parents, Stacy and Jeremy, for keeping her balanced and determined.

“I feel like we are getting better,” she said. “I just have to keep my concentration, and put myself in the zone. I’m not getting as stressed as I was.

“I just have to keep working hard back there and do the best I can.”

And Becker also will keep making the saves.
