GENERAL ELECTION 2022

Democrat Nick Miller and Republican Dean N. Browning are seeking the state Senate seat representing the 14th District. The candidates were asked to respond to the following question in 100 words or less:

Issue

How should Pennsylvania fund its schools?

Democrat Nick Miller My priority is to advocate for the most vulnerable students by ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed. Pennsylvania has a bipartisan formula that equitably funds school districts across the state, but only 17% of Pennsylvania's K-12 funding goes through this updated Fair Funding Formula. This lack of education funding from the state results in inequities I've seen firsthand and adds an additional burden on our property taxpayers. We need to fully implement the formula to eliminate an unjust system that largely benefits only wealthier ZIP codes and is harmful to our children's education overall.
Republican Dean N. Browning We must change the funding mechanism for schools. The use of property taxes may have worked in the last century, but it isn't working in this one. School property taxes are unfair to homeowners, particularly those who are retired. And the reliance on property taxes creates funding imbalances among schools that make it all but impossible for our schools to uniformly graduate students that are prepared to succeed in the global economy. It is time for school property taxes to end - period. As a state senator, I will work to move to another way of funding for our schools. The 14th Pennsylvania Senatorial District includes, in Lehigh County, all of Hanover, Salisbury and Whitehall townships, Districts 01, 02, 04, 05 and 07 in South Whitehall Township and parts of Allentown and all of Catasauqua, Coplay, Emmaus and Fountain Hill boroughs and, in Northampton County, all of Allen, Bushkill, East Allen, Hanover, Lehigh and Moore townships and all of Bath, Chapman, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport boroughs.
