Democrat Josh Shapiro and Republican Doug Mastriano are seeking the governor’s seat. The candidates were asked to respond to the following question in 100 words or less:
Issue
What will you do if elected to ensure Pennsylvania conducts fair and verifiable elections to make certain my one vote is counted and has value?
Democrat Josh Shapiro Dozens of times, I went to court to protect Pennsylvanians' right to vote and ensure every vote was counted – and in the face of those attacks, we won. I will work to ensure voters have access to the ballot box and every legal vote is counted in every election. ... [I will appoint] a pro-democracy secretary of state, allowing counties to pre-canvass and cure ballots, establish automatic voter registration and early in-person voting, and veto any attempt to restrict mail-in voting. I'll work with both parties in the legislature, to find common ground and ensure we can expand access to the ballot box – not restrict it.
Republican Doug Mastriano Numerous requests to Mastriano's campaign went unanswered. The following information is from the Mastriano website. “To keep our elections free and fair, I will appoint a secretary of state who will secure our elections from fraud. I'll partner with the legislature to eliminate ‘no-excuse' mail-in voting, get rid of drop boxes and pass universal voter ID.”
