On Thursday, Oct. 27, Saucon Valley SHS held its annual bonfire. The event was initially planned for Oct.13, the week of Saucon’s Homecoming game and dance, but was postponed due to rain.
Multiple students said they were disappointed when they learned of the postponement, and that it messed up their schedules, but others were glad to have a free afternoon.
Several of Saucon’s seniors spent Thursday morning and afternoon building the bonfire with wood pallets - some donated by local warehouses, others bought from Home Depot.
Members of Lower Saucon Fire Rescue and Dewey Fire Company attended the bonfire and helped contain and eventually extinguish it.
Opinions on the fire itself ranged from “cool” to “worst than most,” but the majority of students interviewed said that they had fun meeting up with friends and listening to Saucon’s marching band, which played at the event. However, most people agreed that the fire was rather small and died down too quickly, especially in comparison to past bonfires.
One student said she was just glad they didn’t burn any of the high school theater’s props or sets, unlike last year. While the seniors who were interviewed plan to go off to college next year and won’t be able to attend in the future, most underclassmen said that they would likely come to Saucon’s next bonfire.
The bonfire served as a prelude to the Saucon Valley Panthers’ last football game of the regular season, which they lost 7-14 against Palisades.
