Recreation improvements highlighted at Lynn meeting

Recreation improvements for the community and a source of additional revenue for the township were among the key items discussed at the Lynn Township supervisors meeting on Oct. 13.

Ontelaunee Park could be home to a recreational zip line as early as spring 2023.

Township officials have tentatively selected the Live Wire model from Playworld, a Lewisburg, Union County, playground equipment supplier.

At an estimated cost of $18,000-$19,000, the structure would span a little over 100 feet from start to arrival, with a fall height of 5 feet 6 inches.

The proposed zip line is part of a continuing effort to improve recreational areas within the township.

“We wanted to purchase one the last time we added playground equipment, but didn’t have enough funds,” Board Chairman Justin Smith said. “Now we have the money so we would like to add it.”

The next steps include defining the exact location within the park and approving the purchase.

A few miles away from Ontelaunee Park, a field advertising program to fund improvements at the Northwestern Recreation Commission Fields is underway.

Local businesses can purchase a 4-foot by 4-foot or 4-foot by 8-foot self-designed sign, along with a one-year or two-year subscription for the signs to be erected on the field pavilion.

The recreation fields contain soccer/lacrosse/multipurpose fields, baseball and softball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, a walking trail and a skate park.

“The first project we are going to tackle is repairing the basketball courts which will cost about $23,000,” Smith said.

All proposed ads must be approved by the Northwestern Recreation Commission and are secured on a first-come, first-served basis.

A proposal for T-Mobile to build onto the cellular tower behind the township building and lease the space from the township was discussed.

A lease agreement is expected to bring in roughly $1,500 in revenue monthly, and the tower improvement will provide better cell coverage for residents.

The final agreement has not been signed, but could be by the end of the year.

In other news, members of the township’s two fire companies are involved in a variety of training classes this fall, including Vehicle Rescue Certification, Emergency Vehicle Operator Course, MOD4 (interior fire ground operation, rescue, ventilation, fire suppression, salvage, protective systems, and firefighter survival), Aerial Rigging, Pumps 1, and HazMat Ops Pre-Board.

New Tripoli Fire Company reported 133 emergency call responses this year. Lynnport reported 41.

New Tripoli Fire Company Chief Gary Kuntz Jr. thanked David Malafarina and New Tripoli Bank for their work on the recruitment and retention video, which is available on the company’s Facebook page.

“They did a tremendous job on that,” he said.
