Warsing places second at districts

Parkland’s Lexie Warsing finished second in the District 11 Class 3A girls singles tennis championship last Friday at Saucon Valley High School.

Warsing, a freshman, had a spectacular season for Parkland coach Michael Hingston’s team as the No. 1 player and she continued her fine play in the district tournament. She began with a dominating performance over Stroudsburg’s Katie Hosko in round one with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Later that afternoon she beat easily a good tennis player in Emmaus’ Shelby Carter, 6-0, 6-1. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Warsing dismissed Easton’s Ellyana Jacobs, one of the region’s better tennis players, in a 6-0, 6-2 sterling tennis exhibition.

It was in the final when Warsing finally met her match. Liberty’s Helena Lynn was the only player to beat Warsing during the regular season and the hex continued in the playoffs as Lynn recorded a 6-2, 6-2 championship victory.

“Lexie has an all-around good game and has no weaknesses,” Hingston said.

The Trojans were represented in the single tournament by two other players - Leah Zolotarev and Gigi Leonzi.

Zolotarev, the tournment’s fifth seed, had a tough opening match assignment against Southern Lehigh’s Kaitlyn Howie. Zolotarev played a determined match and outlasted Howie, 6-4, 6-3. Next up for Zolotarev was another Spartan - Evelyn Wang. Zolotarev gave it her best but came up short in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

Leonzi won a thrilling three-set battle with Stroudsburg’s Lana Marsh, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round. But her tournament ride ended with in the quarterfinals when Jacobs ousted her, 6-0, 6-0.

The District 11 Class 3A team tournament is scheduled for Oct. 10, 11 and 13 at the higher seed’s home court and Lehigh University. The Trojans are the tournament’s number one seed and are scheduled to host eighth-seeded Nazareth in the quarterfinals.
