Girls tennis enters postseason

Shelby Carter and Kate Smith represented the Emmaus girls tennis program in last week’s District 11 Class 3A singles championship.

Carter, the team’s No. 1 singles player during the season, won her first round match last Thursday over Nazareth’s Jessica Rodriguez 6-2, 6-2 at Lehigh University. However, her tournament ended later that afternoon when she was beaten by Parkland’s Lexie Warsing, the tournament’s runner-up, by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Emmaus coach Robert Dragotta has classified Carter as a “hard worker” who is capable of “controlling points” when she is at the top of her game. Carter, a senior, lost only three matches during the regular season and continued to mature this season.

Smith could not make it out of round one losing to Southern Lehigh’s Evelyn Wang, 6-0, 6-4. The Emmaus senior won easily the majority of her ‘22 matches in the No. 2 position. Smith began her Emmaus career as a doubles players before advancing to singles and has been a steadying influence this year on a program which earned a 14-4 regular season record.

The Hornets also competed in the East Penn Conference Tournament recently. All three Emmaus doubles teams finished third in that event.

Maddy Everett and Anna Lyons earned third place in No. 2 doubles, while Alexa Makoul and Reshma Berej finished third in the No. 3 doubles bracket and teammates Ashlyn Py and Nat Marks were third in the No. 4 doubles flight.

In singles action, Lisa Duerholz placed third at No. 3 singles, while Carter finished fifth and Smith was seventh.

The District 11 team championships are scheduled for Oct. 10, 11 and 13. The Green Hornets are the tournament’s fourth seed, and are scheduled to play the fifth seed Southern Lehigh in the quarterfinals. Emmaus beat the Spartans 5-2 in a nonleague match on Aug. 25.
